Four Weeks Old

Jeffrey is four weeks old and will be a month tomorrow! I can't believe it's been that long and I can't believe it hasn't been longer. He is so cute and alert all the time. He loves when I sing songs with him and when we read books (especially the hippo book). I think he looks so much like Cory the more his face fills out, a little mini me.

In other news, we just dropped my mom off at the airport. It was hard to have her go. It was so nice that she could be here through the last few weeks of my pregnancy and the first few weeks of Jeffrey's life. I know she had some great memories of Jeffrey and Germany...so people, book your tickets now!

We wish all the daddy's happy Father's Day and hope you all have world peace and good kids! (right dad?)

A Mid Eastern Meal

A week ago at a church function to raise money for the Young Women to have some summer activities we bid for a home cooked mid eastern meal from the Najdawi family. Tonight sister Najdawi and her daughter brought the meal to us hot from their kitchen. The meal was wonderful.

Jeffrey and the Windows

Jeffrey loves to look out the window. I don't know if he can really see anything, but he loves to look outside or at any light. Yesterday we had a really big rain storm and I was in the front room talking to him and playing with him in his boppy when the rain started. He turned and watched and listened. I think he could hear the raindrops through the open window. It was so cute.

We also went for pictures at the photo studio here. Jeffrey was such a good boy and cooperated during all of the pictures. We're going to look at them today and I can't wait to see them. The photographer (who I know because she's done all our dance photos) kept squealing and saying how cute he was. He even looked right at the camera and gave them one of his big smiles. What a cute baby I have!

The Sergeant Morales Club

This morning the members of the board accepted me into the Sergeant Morales Club. Sergeant Morales is a fictional character who's story represents the excellence that the NCO Corp strives to achieve. I have appeared at several boards where I was interviewed with situational questions focusing on how to train, care for and lead soldiers. Being in the club sets me apart from my peers and sets a high standard of conduct and knowledge that I must follow through on for the rest of my career. Later I will attend an induction ceremony and then become a part of the local Sergeant Morales Club chapter.

Photos from Our Garmisch Trip

Home from Garmisch

We have had a great time on our trip to Garmisch. While in the car, we listened to The Dante Club, and enjoyed each others company while on the tour of castles and the Salt Mines of Berchtesgaden. Jeffrey traveled well in his carrier and slept most of the way through the night. It is nice to be home again after a long car trip. We are glad that Peggy has been here to have these adventures with us.

Edelweiss

We have had a grand time at the Edelweiss Resort in Garmisch, Germany. On our car trip to the resort, we traveled through some beautiful green countryside until we came to mountain country. It is great to be surrounded by sturdy mountains again. Our hotel accommodations have been great and even offer internet access so that I can carry on my schoolwork in the evening time.

This morning we traveled to the Neuschwanstein Castle, probably one of the most famous and iconic castles in the world. The Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disney Land is modeled after it. We do not have our camera USB cables with us, so I cannot send a photo until we return home. The tour of the castle was quite short. Although the castle is quite large, only a very small portion of it is finished since the death of King Ludwig II halted the project in its tracks. There was a climb involved in getting up the hill to it, but that provided a great view of the beautiful valley, lake, and surrounding town looking out from the tower windows.

Jeffrey has been great traveling. He falls fast asleep in the car and did well in his carrier today. Peggy discovered his dimples that appear when he smiles big. He is sleeping most of the way through the night, only needing attention to each and be changed in the early morning.

On My Way to an Associates Degree

I just finished turning in my final essays that I wrote for my COM 120 and IT 105 classes. Taking two classes at a time in this manner will allow me to finish my associates degree and get started on my bachelors degree in less than one year. Thanks Uncle Sam for paying for college.

Blessing Jeffrey

I was fortunate enough to have the morning off which made it so that I could go to church in my best suit and bless Jeffrey. I felt impressed to bless him with the gift of laughter; physical, mental, and spiritual strength; the ability to be a good friend to his associates and family members; to have experiences that will keep him strong in the gospel. After the blessing he began to get hungry so I also had my first experience taking him out into the hall to keep the chapel quiet.

Two Weeks Old

Jeffrey turned two weeks today! What a big boy already. Even after loosing his newborn weight he's picked up a few extra ounces and weighs 9 lbs. 4 oz. He's mostly wearing 3 month size clothes at this point, but we're getting all the small outfits worn before he grows out of them. We posted a TON of pictures on Ringo today, but here are a few...

In the Woods of the Grafenwohr Training Area

While our students were on the land navigation course I took some time to walk around with my camera and take some photos after last nights rain showers. The low light of the cloudy sky made for perfect lighting to take some nature shots. The forests of Bavaria are wonderful for walking in.

Another Day at Home

We had a great time hanging around home today. A short rainstorm came in and cooled everything off for us. SFC Baskerville and 1SG Watson came to our home to deliver a flower arrangement from the “Men of 2nd PLT.”

After waking up early to get a bottle for Jeffrey, I put my bike in the car and drove until I was thoroughly lost in a maze of small villages and ready to get out and ride. It did not take long to find myself at the top of a ridge looking out into a valley of morning fog all around me. I had marked the site of my car with my GPS and found my self needing the GPS to get back to it. By the time I made it back to the car I was wet up to my waste from walking through farmer’s fields in the dew of the morning. You do not have to go far to find an adventure in Germany.

I took my bike into the woods today for some fun off road biking. With my new set of gears that go extra low I am able to pop a wheely in a farmer’s field of wheat or trample the brush and moss around the trees. It is fun to find some little road that goes into the woods and follow it until it ends, and then go even further.

Jeep

Tricia found a great carrier for Jeffrey at Target and it arrived today. This is no baby bjorn for going to the mall or Tupperware parties, this is an all terrain Jeep ready for hiking and adventures in wild country.

Making Jewelry with Tricia

In order to spend some good time with Tricia I thought it would be good to do something that she enjoys, so last night and this evening I worked on and completed a necklace, matching bracelet and earrings for her. Tricia is thinking about making a small business on the internet selling handmade jewelry.

The Story from My Side of the Bed...

My sweet baby boy was born last Thursday morning at 4:45 after (get this) 15 hours of hard labor! I went into the hospital the previous morning after seeing my regular doctor because I was having regular contractions every 6 minutes. He told me that if I was having pain I should go in and be checked and they'd let me know what to do then. So we called Cory and told him to come home and headed up to the hospital. I told the midwife my story and they did a fetal monitoring for 30 minutes which showed the contractions were regular and between 5-6 minutes. The doctor did a check and said that my water hadn't broken, but she thought labor would for sure be in the next day or two. She couldn't say for sure, just told me that if the pains got worse or my water broke to come back in. Only mildly discouraged, but happier at the prospect we left. By the time we got to the parking lot and were walking to the car my water broke. I wasn't entirely convinced though (after having just been told it would be another day) and so I made Cory drive the 20 minutes home while I counted contractions, they were coming every 3 minutes and were a little more intense than before. But I was hungry and I wanted to eat (they told us we could in Germany and I was going to take advantage of it since I know it's ice chips only in the states).

We went back to the hospital almost immediately after getting home and this time they did the fetal monitoring again, the little line showing the contractions went lots higher this time and were definately more intense. The doctor did the check and then they said they would keep me. Yay!! I was so glad that there would be no inducing and no more waiting. They showed us to our room and the midwife told me to come back once an hour for the fetal monitoring to make sure baby was still doing well, but in between to walk and help the baby come as quickly as possible. I was still determined to go naturally, but I did accept the offer of IV pain meds (which didn't do much let me tell you!). I have to say the whole experience was really natural and amazing. I had one midwife who would come and check on me anytime I'd come back to the labor room and she was so encouraging. For the first several hours I was very peaceful and would even sleep inbetween contractions. After 10 that night she said she had to go but the nighttime midwife would be there and she couldn't wait to see the baby in the morning. The second midwife (who actually delivered the baby) was so good. She was very encouraging and soothing and when I went from a 6 to a 10 very quickly she stayed the entire time and helped me breathe through the contractions.

Cory was abnormally tired and kept falling asleep. He tried to stay awake and was good when he was there, but he was pretty useless so he went back to the waiting room and took a nap. My mom stayed with me the whole time and would hold my hand through the tough pains and help me. Cory did come back in when I was about a 6 and stayed right by my side the last few hours. The last hour was so hard though, I just kept telling them I couldn't do it, it was too hard and I couldn't do it. The midwife kept patting my head and telling me it was ok, I didn't realize right at the end how close it was and was amazed when Cory said he could see the head. A few loud pushes later and my baby was born. He's absolutely beautiful and a big boy too!! He was 9 lbs 4 oz. and 21 in. long. The midwives kept telling me they knew why it was so long. I'm still recovering, I think they described it best on the Gilmore Girls when she said it's like doing the splits on a crate of dynamite. But I'm sore and trying to recover as quickly as I can. We're both trying to figure out feeding and all of that, but it's nice to be home.

Peggy and I woke up early to get the house cleaned before going to the hospital to be with Tricia and Jeffrey. We don’t want Tricia to have to think about cleaning the house when she gets home, and we want it to look extra nice for our baby’s first trip home.

Tricia has been recovering very quickly and Jeffrey is doing wonderfully. We pass him between the three of us as we talk or watch a movie until the night when Peggy and I come home to get dinner and go to bed.

Family Resemblance

Post a comment to let us know what family resemblances you see.

Jeffrey Robert MacNeil

Jeffrey Robert MacNeil was born on 17 May 2007 at 0445 at the Weiden hospital in Germany. He weighed in at nine pounds and four ounces, and 21 inches tall. Tricia is doing great, but Peggy and I needed to come home for a nap after being up all night with Tricia.
Our experience at the hospital was great. The mid wives were very attentive to us, and the doctor that came in for delivery did his job well. The delivery room was comfortable and the ward where Tricia will be staying has a nice atmosphere.

Our Happy Anniversary

I slipped away from work at lunch in order to pick up a bouque of flowers for Tricia. I had a quick lunch with her while we exchanged gifts. While at the PX several days ago, she look at the jewlry display and found some hand made cameo on agate that she liked. We went back yesterday to pick one up as her gift from me. I wanted to include a picture of it, but I could not get close enough to pick up the amazing detail without getting a blurry photo. I was able to make it home from work at a decent hour so that we could have an evening together.

Still Waiting

No sign of baby yet. He's just taking his time before he makes an entrance into the world. Cory votes that he'll be here on our Anniversary (Saturday). I'm feeling big but good and oddly patient. I'm sure he'll come when he comes. The doctor does a fetal monitoring every other day, just to make sure the baby is OK, and that's the latest news from us.

Cory will be at the hospital with me for the first little while, and he has to come home to make any phone calls to the US, so you will all know as soon as he can get away. One of the drawbacks to being in Germany I guess.

We had some awesomely amazing Cafe Rio pork salads last night. We found the recipe online and my mom spent lots of the day making it, but it tasted so good. It was nice to have a little piece of Utah here.

I took Peggy and Tricia on my first geo cache adventure in Germany. Our grid coordinates took us out into a quiet spot in the Bavarian forest where we followed clues to get to the next point, and finally to the cache which was hidden on the back side of a guard rail.

Time Together

Tricia and Peggy have take up some new hobbies to pass the time together. While visiting Paige in Texas several months ago, Tricia and Peggy picked up on making bead jewlry and have brought the hobby back to Germany with them. They are also working on a quilt together. The pattern material came from the local hobby shop on post, and the wood for the frame was purchased at the local hardware store.
