One of my teachers, Cynthia and me after I'd finished the first two rounds. So Cory ALMOST got the spelling right, it's a funny Gaelic word, so just add a few odd vowels and you're good to go. Oireachtas (Oh-ROCK-tus) is the regional qualifiers for Irish dance. When I found out that Cory was deploying this year I set my goal to compete at the O. It was a challenge I won't lie to you. There was the dancing itself, after three years off of competitive dancing getting back into training kicked my butt, especially at 6,000 ft. Then I had to figure out something for Jeffrey. I won't get into my whole parenting philosophy, but I really don't like daycares and so my teacher Molly Bennett asked around and found me a babysitter who would watch Jeffrey at the studio while I danced. Jeffrey LOVES Dani (his babysitter) and though at first he didn't like going to dance where he couldn't go where Mommy was, he loves it now. He'll ask if we're going to Dani's House (the studio) sometimes.
Then came the Bronchitis plague of 09. My mom and I both got it and I'm pretty sure we both felt like dying at the worst of it. So then I had to dance with crappy lungs. Bottom line, I am still not 100% health wise but I competed. I also didn't have a dress that fit without being several inches too short in the arms or stuck out in the back like a duck tail. Molly made this dress (which we call the miracle dress) in literally NO TIME at all and I was pinned into just minutes before dancing.
The top will be embroidered more and the lace collar that's in the front now won't be included but in the back is a lace collar we found in Gram's closet that I wanted to use. It's totally different but I love it!
All of the dancers dance two rounds (hard shoe and then soft shoe) and then they recall the top half of dancers to dance a third round alone for final placing. I didn't recall this year because I almost passed out in my hard shoe round from lack of oxygen. But I did better than I thought even with everything I had to go with. But I was pleased with how I did. I am going to keep working and pick a few more competitions to do in the next few months to see how I do. Anyway I love Irish Dancing and I had a great time at the Oireachtas this year! Whee.
